Winners have been decided and prizes have been chosen. Congratulations to Daniel Jackson, the Grand Prize winner, and to Henrique Holschuh, winner of an Honorable Mention. Go check out the winning entries, and take a look at other entries as well. You can also read my comments on the contest, including a joke contest entry I wrote myself, and my thoughts for my next contest.
If anyone has comments about the contest, feel free to email me. I may post any particularly insightful responses that I receive.
The 3x3 Eyes manga was first published in Japan, in Young Magazine Pirate Edition, on December 14, 1987. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of this event, I decided to hold a contest. It took me a while to come up with a decent idea, but one night around 2AM (the best time for ideas) it came to me. So, the contest is this:
Guess the Name of the Next 3x3 Eyes Anime Series!!
For months there has been a rumor that a 3x3 Eyes television series is in production in Japan. There has been no official confirmation, but the mere thought of seeing 3x3 Eyes on TV is exciting. In short, a contest entry should guess the full title of this series. I am assuming that the title will have a form similar to that of the most recent video series, 3x3 Eyes ~Seima Densetsu~ (Legend of the Divine Demon), but this should not restrict the format of your entry.
But wait! Before you bombard me with one-line guesses, let me explain further. This is a little different from most contests. For one thing, as I said the 3x3 Eyes TV series is only a rumor, and I do not plan to keep this contest open for months waiting for some new 3x3 Eyes anime to appear. Also, a simple one-line guess is not very exciting. Therefore, the main goal here is creativity, not correctness. A good entry should suggest what the new series should be called in your opinion, in as convincing (or humorous) a manner as possible. It's hard to be convincing in a single phrase, so the real challenge is creating the supporting material. For examples, see the Tips & Suggestions section.
So let those creative juices flow, and start thinking of your concept for the new 3x3 Eyes anime title!
A contest wouldn't be complete without prizes! There will be a Grand Prize for the best entry, as well as smaller prizes for any Honorable Mentions. (See the complete rules for an explanation of honorable mentions.)
The Virtual Shopping Spree means that the Grand Prize winner can tell me what 3x3 Eyes goods he or she would like, and I will do all the shopping. I live in Japan, so chances are good that I can find cool stuff. The values given are the minimum values, but the maximum depends greatly on the quality of the entries. Don't expect of complete set of 3x3 Eyes laserdiscs, though. I'm just a poor salaryman. ^_^ All shipping costs for the prizes will be covered by me, and any special shipping considerations can be discussed.
The Grand Prize winner and any Honorable Mentions will also receive the fame of having their entries posted here on the World Wide Web for the world to admire. I may also post some interesting non-winning entries, especially if the judging is close.
As of January 27, 1998, the contest is open! See the section below for information on how to submit an entry.
Entries will be accepted through Saturday, March 7, 1998. No entries will be accepted after that date. (I may be a little lenient about last-minute entries, but if I don't have the entry in my mailbox by 5:30 PM Japan Standard Time on Monday, March 9, then it will not be accepted.)
Winners will be announced as soon as possible after the end date of the contest. This depends greatly on the number of entries, but I will try to complete the judging process as quickly as possible.
First, an entry must include the following:
Entries should be submitted by email. If you cannot submit your entry by email, consult the complete rules for alternate instructions. Attached files should be smaller than 1 Megabyte. If you have any questions, contact me at dpark@writeme.com. This address is ONLY for questions, not entry submissions.
Keep in mind you can only submit a single entry, so be sure that everything is complete and ready to go. If you have read all the rules, then send your entry to the following address:
Entry Submission ONLY: sazaneyes@yahoo.comI will notify you with an email reply when I receive your entry. It may take me several days to reply, since I usually cannot check my email on weekends.
The primary judge will be me, David Park. This is my contest, and I am providing the prizes, so I want to pick the winner. However, to make this a little less arbitrary I would really like to have one or two other people volunteer to help judge the entries. If someone does not want to enter the contest and would like to be a judge, contact me. Please tell me a little about yourself if I don't already know you.
Here are a few general ideas for the type of supporting material that could be included with an entry.
Write a short story (fanfic style) describing the plot of a single episode from the new anime, or draw a storyboard from the episode.
Imagine if your favorite director/character designer/musician/voice actor was involved with the new anime, and provide a script/sketch/song/dialogue (or a description of one of these things) likely to result from that person's influence.
Write a brief description of the plot if the new series decided to ignore the established plotline and focus specifically on your favorite character or story element.
You get the idea. There are really no format restrictions, so think of an interesting concept and develop it as best you can. Do not think that you have to write a book to win the contest. A single picture or a paragraph or two of text, if creative and well executed, will have a good chance of winning a prize. I personally came up with about a dozen specific ideas not mentioned here (including the idea that triggered this contest), so if you are stuck feel free to ask me for suggestions.
