[This news was taken from Takada News, a temporary page set up when I lost telnet access to 3x3 Eyes Info. Excuse any broken links.] April 20, 1998Contest Results OnlineSorry for the long wait. The results of the 3x3 Eyes 10th Anniversary Contest are available from the contest page. The comments are not posted yet, but they'll be up in a few days. Lots of changes should be taking place here soon... March 17, 19983x3 Eyes FAQ Draft #3a (HTML version)I finished up the HTML version of the FAQ, and fixed a few minor errors in the process. (It's Southern All Stars, not Southern All-Stars.) The HTML version should be basically the same as the text version, so let me know if you find any problems. The HTML version of the FAQ is a UTF-8 encoded Unicode document. This means that it contains 16-bit characters (in this case Japanese text) while still being mostly compatible with US-ASCII. Modern web browsers should be able to view the document with no problems, but your browser or operating system must support Japanese text to see the non-ASCII characters. I recommend that Windows users install Internet Explorer 4 and the Japanese language extension. This works great for viewing Unicode. (Netscape Navigator 4 works too, but not as well.) Unicode is the future, so start getting used to it. For the curious, I used JWP to create the Japanese text, which I saved as an EUC file and converted to UTF-8 using TCS. TCS has its problems, but so far I've been able to get it to work with a little trial and error. Both JWP and TCS are available at the Monash Nihongo archive or one of the mirrors. If I had my NT machine I wouldn't have these problems, since NT natively supports Unicode. I'm assuming Windows 98 will support it as well. From The ArchivesHere are some Romanized lyrics and song titles (not translated, but good for singing along) from the first 3x3 Eyes ~Seima Densetsu~ CD soundtrack that I've had sitting on my hard drive for a while. These were provided by cleod & net-chan, and I didn't change anything except converting the files to plain text and adding in their names. Here's an old article by Toren Smith on Manga Censorship that mostly discusses Ghost In The Shell but also mentions 3x3 Eyes. This used to be found at a Ghost In The Shell website located at http://www.nuthatch.com/rynersw/manga/gits/gits.html, but that link is apparently dead now. If anyone knows where this page moved to, please let me know. Finally, I came across a translation of a few chapters of 3x3 Eyes vol. 10, but I'm trying to track down the author before I post them. John Rong, a.k.a. silic_codara@why.net, if you're still out there, get in touch with me. Stats and RatingsThe 3x3 Eyes manga is still quite popular. Sales figures for late January and early February list 3x3 Eyes manga vol. 27 as the number two selling comic, beneath the latest Mei-tantei Conan manga. Considering the popularity of Conan (20% TV rating and the manga runs in the most popular weekly magazine in the country), this is very good for 3x3 Eyes. 3x3 Eyes Icons Yet AgainHeh, poor Dark Fiber, he tries to do something nice and gets nothing but trouble. If you downloaded to last zip file, then you don't need this one, since it's basically the same. However, this one includes a brief readme if you had no idea what to do with the ICL file. Grab 3x3icons.zip (105 KB) while you can. Some help is below if you're still having problems. March 13, 19983x3 Eyes FAQ Draft #3Here is the latest draft of the 3x3 Eyes FAQ, which will be officially released as part of the redesigned 3x3 Eyes Info site. This is the text version, but an HTML version will be available soon. I would appreciate any comments you may have. 3x3 Eyes Icons UpdateIf you had problems with the icon file mentioned in the last news update, you weren't alone. Dark Fiber has zipped up the ICL file to help avoid errors during download. The icons in the new zip (link removed to avoid confusion, look above) are the same as in the old file. The contents are: all icons 48x48x256 Pai 18 icons Yakumo 6 Takuhi 2 Ran Pao Pao 2 Fei Oh 1 Ling Ling 1 Mei Xin 2 Haan 1 Misc 4 == 38 icons!! wow! To use the 256-color icons, you need Win95 with the Plus Pack, Windows NT, or Win98. First unzip the SazanAisu.icl file to a permanent location on your hard drive. To use one of the icons, right-click on an icon on your desktop, select Properties, click on the Shortcut tab, and click the Change Icon button. Then select Browse and find the SazanAisu.icl file. You should see pictures of all the icons in the file, so choose one you like and click OK. That's it. If you want to edit the ICL file or create something similar on your own, go get the Microangelo shareware program. March 10, 19983x3 Eyes IconsDark Fiber of the Sazan Eyes Fanfiction Homeroom has created a 3x3 Eyes icon pack (132 KB) for Windows. There are 38 icons in all. I haven't tried it yet, but apparently you need the Plus add-on for Windows 95 (or just Windows NT or 98) to use them. Download them before they disappear! March 5, 1998Contest ReminderI just wanted to remind everyone that the deadline for the 3x3 Eyes 10th Anniversary Contest is fast approaching. The contest officially ends on March 7, 1998. However, like I mention on the contest page, I can't check my email on the weekend, so there's a little extra time if you need it. Actually, I'm thinking about using a vacation day on Monday, so that gives you until Tuesday Japan time to email me your entry. I've received very few entries so far, so there's a good chance you might win something if you enter. ^_^ Anime Blues in the USAAccording to The Right Stuf webpage, all of the Orion/Streamline catalog is still on hold and stores are running out, so now is probably your last chance in the USA to grab a copy of the 3x3 Eyes Perfect Collection or the new 3x3 Eyes 5 & 6 videos. Nobody knows what MGM's plans are for anime in the future, though they should start rereleasing some Orion videos this year. The Right Stuf also mentioned that Bandai Visual is creating a US branch office. They are the company behind the 3x3 Eyes anime (not to mention cool series like Gundam) so there may be hope yet. By the way, you should have no problem ordering the 3x3 Eyes anime on video or laserdisc from Japan. The first anime series may be out of print, but I had no trouble finding it.
